I first want to start off by thanking JIA for giving me this opportunity to travel on this trip to Nicaragua. Words cant express the new love I have found for the people of Nicaragua. I've been home for two days now and the memory of the "Chureca" (city dump) and "Marecelis" are in my thoughts and dreams. If I don't share their stories my trip would be in vain.
Marecelis is a 7 year old girl I meet in Granada at a school in a small poor run down village. Out of all the little children at the school we visited she stuck out the most. She had no shoes her clothes where too small and she had a cloth wraped around her foot from an injury . I asked her where her shoes where and she told me" I'm too poor for shoes can you please give me a toy"? I gave her a small doll and I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up she replied "My mother is poor so I will be poor as well".
Can you measure poverty? If we could I think this place "Chureca" would out measure everything I've ever seen when It comes to poverty. Picture a dump where mothers, fathers, and children are allowed by the government to work and live due to Poverty. Every time a dump truck comes to dump the city's waste its the opportunity to scavenge through it to find a meal or recycle goods.
My experience on this trip wont be in vain. The memory of what I've seen wont let me forget. I hope these small summarized experiences will help you make the decision to make a difference by donating either your time, money, clothes, or anything you can. Help JIA make a difference In the fight against Hunger and Poverty. God Bless
